About the Taglit birthright israel Gift

Who is eligible for the Taglit birthright israel gift?

18-26 year olds (post high-school) who are considered Jewish by any of the major Jewish denominations and have not been on an educational peer-group trip to Israel before can take advantage of the gift.

What if I have already been to Israel? Am I still eligible?

Taglit birthright israel trips are geared for those who have not experienced a peer-group educational program in Israel. Therefore, you are still eligible if you have been to Israel visiting relatives, on a Bar/Bat Mitzvah tour, or on your own.
Can people who do not qualify pay to go on one of the birthright israel gift trips?

The program is geared toward those on their first organized visit to Israel and that meet the Taglit birthright israel eligibility requirements. It would not be appropriate for those who do not meet these requirements. Also, we only have enough seats reserved for qualified participants.

Are there any hidden costs in this gift?

The Taglit birthright israel gift covers airfare to and from Israel, and 10 days of programming and accommodations in Israel. Due to the limited number of seats available, participants will be required to provide a $250 ($300 Canadian) deposit once they are accepted on the program. This will be refunded in full once they have returned from the trip. Participants will also want to bring spending money with them.

What will be my accommodations?

Each program will provide different accommodations, but all will be in 3 or 4 star hotels, quality hostels or guest houses around the country.
Can I travel with my friends?

Since no one is guaranteed that they will be selected it is impossible to make these arrangements. However, if friends apply to the same trip, there is the possibility that they both will get to go.
Can I get academic credit for this program?

Taglit birthright israel gift trips are not accredited programs. However, some trips may offer academic credit. You can contact the Trip Organizers to find out if academic credit is an option.
Is the Taglit birthright israel: Jerusalem Fellowships trip a co-ed program?

Yes, but at certain times while touring men and women may be separated in order to accommodate the religious orientation of some of the students and staff.

Travel and Logistical Arrangements

What if I can't leave on the assigned departure date? Can I go early?

Participants need to leave for the program on their program's assigned departure date. Please keep in mind that you will be required to arrange travel to the programs departure location..

Can I extend my stay in Israel?

There may be an option to extend your stay (up to 90 days maximum) depending on which flight you are traveling on as well as availability. Please note that there will be a fee charged by the airline/travel agent for any deviations from the group itinerary. The Taglit birthright israel: Jerusalem Fellowships will provide you with all the necessary information regarding ticket extensions.

What will the $250 deposit be used for? Are there any hidden costs?

The $250 deposit is to ensure that your seat is filled on the airplane and that you participate fully in the program. If these conditions are satisfied, your deposit will be returned shortly after your return home.

The only other costs to participants are a handful of meals and tips for guides/drivers (which should total about $100), as well as travel to your programs departure location. Participants may wish to bring additional spending money.

What if I get sick in Israel? Do I need my own health insurance?

The Taglit birthright israel: Jerusalem Fellowships is committed to the emotional and physical well-being of all participants on our programs.

All participants are required to purchase emergency medical insurance to cover them during their stay in Israel.  We will purchase the insurance for you, for a charge of $20. This insurance covers emergency conditions on the ground, and will not cover any pre-existing conditions, follow-up treatment or expenses after participants return to the United States.

All participants are required to have their own health insurance to cover these contingencies. You should contact your local insurance carrier for their coverage and reimbursement policies. Your security deposit may be used to cover any incidental medical expenses incurred by the Taglit birthright israel:Jerusalem Fellowships on your behalf during the course of the program.

As part of the Taglit birthright israel: Jerusalem Fellowships medical coverage, the following levels of treatment are available in the event of illness or injury:

- Basic first aid is administered by a medic accompanying the group, such as dispensing bandaids, medicine for headaches, etc., much like a camp nurse.
- Should the medic and group staff decide that a doctor needs to be consulted, the participant will be seen during pre-arranged doctor's hours. These doctors maintain a supply of common medications and, when necessary, prescribe additional medication. They will also refer participants to specialists, when necessary.
- Should urgent medical care be required, participants will immediately be taken to an authorized clinic or to an emergency room.

Participants will be accompanied by a staff member on any visits to doctors, clinics or hospitals.

Is security a concern?

The safety and security of participants is our primary concern. A security orientation for issues specific to travel in Israel will be given to all participants upon arrival.

Precautions will be taken to ensure the safety of all participants and to minimize safety risks. The itinerary of each group is coordinated with the appropriate Israeli security authorities. Experienced travel guides, well versed in security procedures, lead these trips and maintain ongoing contact with the Jerusalem Fellowships office in Israel.

What if I am unable to go at the last minute?

If you are chosen to go on the program you will have to provide a $250 deposit ($300 Canadian) to reserve your place. If you cancel your participation on the trip after the published deadlines for cancellation, then you will forfeit the security deposit.

What happens in case of emergency?

Participants will be provided in advance with contact information for the New York Jerusalem Fellowships office and the hotels in which they will be staying on the program.

On a daily basis, the Jerusalem Fellowships office. will also be in contact with our birthright israel staff in Israel. A report from Israel with health, programming and other issues will be forwarded to our NY office regularly, and our staff will be available to answer questions during our normal business hours.

Registration

If I register does that guarantee me a place on the program?

No one is guaranteed acceptance on a Taglit birthright israel gift trip.  Applicants will subsequently be contacted by the Trip Organizer they have applied to regarding their acceptance for an interview in order to ensure the applicant's eligibility and suitability for the trip.

Do I have a better chance of being accepted if I apply early?

Applying early in the registration process will neither increase nor detract from your chances in being selected.  Acceptance will not be based on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Can I apply for more than one trip?

Due to the overwhelming response to our trips, each applicant is limited to applying for one program.

The Basics

Will there be any free time on the trip?

Don't worry. English is a widely spoken language in Israel. Most people who participate do not speak Hebrew and manage just fine with their English vocabulary.

I don't remember much from Hebrew school. Will I fit in?
